Children's Hospital of Michigan is among the top 40 hospitals that will be published in the magazine, placing it among America's best providers of pediatric health care. The comprehensive survey, whose complete results will appear in the February 2007 issue of Child magazine on January 9, was based on strict criteria and data compiled during the magazine's extensive 9-month investigation. Since 2002, Keystone STARS has worked to improve the quality of child care by promoting staff education, staff participation in ongoing professional development, use of a curriculum and helping practitioners support children's early learning and development. As of September, nearly 4,300 child care programs were enrolled in Keystone STARS. A study released recently, "2006 Evaluation of Pennsylvania's Keystone STARS Quality Rating System in Child Care Settings," shows an increase in quality in child care since the decline in the mid-1990s and a sharp increase in quality among programs participating in Keystone STARS. Keystone STARS is making it possible for child care providers to reach their goal of continuous quality improvement. Monroe County has 115 licensed child care practitioners actively enrolling children with 60 percent participating in the Keystone STARS program.

Babysitter and husband held for suffocating crying child
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police have detained a babysitter and her husband for allegedly causing the death of an eight-month old child by using a pillow to smother the crying baby, reports said on Thursday. The child had been sent to a hospital in the northern Kedah state late on Tuesday where he was declared dead upon arrival. Following a post mortem, the boy was found to have been smothered to death, the Star daily said. Police immediately detained the two suspects, aged 22, for questioning. The suspects had allegedly suffocated the baby with a pillow after he refused to stop crying, the report said. The baby's parents had employed the services of the babysitter to care for the child for several months, it said.
